Can dance, an art based on the flow of movement, be captured by photography? What are the inherent properties of photographs documenting art, can the history of dance be told with photographs? We will try to answer these and other questions during the talk about the newly published photobook.
Insatiability of the Gaze: Photography of Dance, edited by Anna Królica, is, first of all, an album with photographs – there are 160 of them in the book. “With this publication, we wish to draw viewers attention to a group of photographers who accompany performances as they evolve, capturing also their final stage versions. At the same time, we seek answers to the question whether dance photographers alter and broaden the understanding of what deserves attention in dance, and what we can legitimately notice during a performance?
It is a pioneering book about a highly diverse phenomenon, involving a range of forms – from documentary photography to artistic experimentation.
Anna Królica (b. 1982) – curator, critic, and dance historian, graduate in theatrology and Russian Philology from the Jagiellonian University.
