Traces presents a selection of photomontages created by Weronika Gęsicka on the basis of American stock photographs from the 1950s and 1960s. Family scenes, holiday memories, everyday life—all of that suspended somewhere between truth and fiction. The images, modified by Gęsicka in various ways, are wrapped in a new context: our memories of the people and situations are transformed and blur gradually. Humorous as they may seem, Gęsicka’s works are a comment on such fundamental matters as identity, self-consciousness, relationships, and imperfection.
Weronika Gęsicka (b. 1984, Włocławek). Graduated from the graphics department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. A winner of Foam Talent (2017), Spotlight Award (2017, Belfast Photo Festival) and LensCulture Emerging Talent Awards (2016). A finalist of Prix HSBC pour la Photographie (2017), Prix Levallois (2016) and the ShowOFF section of Krakow Photomonth 2016. In her projects she addresses topics related to memory and the way it operates. She is interested in scientific and pseudoscientific theories, mnemonics, and various disorders concerning them. Her main field of activity is photography, but she also creates objects and artefacts, often in collaboration with craftsmen and sometimes with other artists. An important part of her art is working with archive materials of various sources. These are image banks or images found on the internet and police archives, as well as old press photography.
